Burkliplatz - winter

Burkliplatz - winter

I can state with some confidence that I won't be the harbinger of breaking news if I tell you that it is cold in Zurich.

The Lake however, unlike every other bit of exposed water, has not frozen. I read somewhere that it needs temperatures consistently below -10C for 40 days to achieve this. While it is hovering around this figure at the moment, and has been for a few days, if it persists for over a month it will take more than the wholesale freezing of the Zurichsee to cheer me up.

How people in Canada or Russia or wherever survive when the mercury dips to -30C or -40C for prolonged periods is beyond me.

Panta Rhei

Panta rhei

A view on the Zurichsee, with a storm clearing. The strange sounding title of the post is the name of the ship in the foreground - Panta Rhei - a new addition to the Zürichsee-Schifffahrtsgesellschaft. The strange name which sounds vaguely eastern, actually comes from the Greek philosopher Heraclitus (wikipedia)

I'll let you investigate that yourselves - what's plain is that it's a big shift from the stout traditional "Stadt Zürich" and "Stadt Rapperswil"

Zurichhorn

Zurich, Zurichhorn

Taken from roughly the same spot as the previous two photos, but with a telephoto - 300mm - as opposed to 31mm wide angle. The little spit of land sticking out into the lake is the Zurichhorn, part of a nice little lakeside park.

Similar idea to yesterday's photo. Same time, same place. Different props, different actors.

This is quite an interesting composition. What's interesting about it is that I've loitered at this spot countless times every week for the past umpteen years, and this is the first time I've spotted it. It's adjacent to the Ganymede statue that I've been boring people with for umpteen years...

It's not as though it was a rare combination of circumstances. This view is always contre-jour, the distant mountains are almost always hazy, there are always people hanging around for convenient silhouettes. As far as I remember, the railings haven't recently rearranged themselves.

Sometimes I wander about with the camera, and it seems like there are no photos - however I just remind myself that something always turns up, even in your own, well-worn backyard.

Lake Zürich - Zürichsee

Lake Zürich - Zürichsees

The lake is pretty cold at the moment - I think this photo has a suitably arctic look to it. And almost a complete absence of the usual teeming wheeling gulls and water fowl.

Rapperswil

I think I'm going to get in to trouble with a certain blogger from Surrey, England. This photo exhibits all the things I criticised about his Thames photo recently, and adds quite a few of its own.. tempus fugit tho'

Rapperswil is at the southern end of Lake Zurich, and a very nice place it is too. Hotel Schwanen is on the shore - Joseph Roth wrote bits of "The Radetzky March" there - that's the one with words in it, not the Josef Strauss version, although that has it's charm and illuminates the book.

Yes, there was a heavy frost last night.......

Stadt Zürich

Talking about selling my "little" Bronica ETRS made me go back and look at the GS1 images in my archive. I love them, and this web shot doesn't do justice to the range of tones and quality in a large print. (11000 x 9000 pixels btw) Ah - nostalgia. I'm probalbly going to go along with Chuckeroons advice and keep them all. As long as I shoot with them now and again

UPDATE: just notived a bit of a scanning problem on the left side

Hi there!

There's always some joker trying to sneak into your photo....

The Lake

Anyone who lives near a large body of water knows the delights of the ever changing light and atmosphere. Also very handy for the daily photographer who is at a loss for a shot. As I've shown before this view of the lake from the tram is seen by thousands every day in all it's different guises (with or without Ganymede)

Burkliplatz

I haven't posted a photo of Ganymede for a while, so here's one - first of 2008

What do you think?

This is a photo taken at the weekend in Luzern. What do you make of the composition? Some people would say that it is "unbalanced" - the right hand side is dark and the left hand side is light. I have my opinion, and just because I posted it doesn't mean I disagree with this... what do you think?

D.S Stadt Zürich

d.s. Stadt Zürich

Well, a bit lazy, but another picture of the Zürichsee steamer Stadt Zürich. This is for a friend who has just been experiencing her sister of the seas, the SS Waverley. It doesn't seem so long ago that I was posting about the first cruise of the season, and we are now approaching the last (well, sometime in September)

Apparently it's been a bumper year for the cruises, as was last year. This reflects a general boom in Swiss tourism, driven I guess by the favourable exchange rates amongst other things

Ganymede (again)

Another pic of the Ganymede statue overlooking the lake - some pigeons encouraging the eagle to take to the air

D.S. Uri

DS URI

In Luzern, so a sneaky off-location image. The paddle steamer "D.S. Uri" leaving the quai alongside the Konzerthalle Luzern. Named after one of the 4 forest cantons that formed the original Swiss Federation.

Sunrise over Lake Zurich

Sunrise Lake Zurich

Sunrise over Lake Zurich. Rather a strange lighting effect and cloud formation, almost like a sandstorm. Published in colour especially for Nathalie at Sydney Daily Snap

Hydrostatics - balls

Water sculpture

Along the lakeside towards Zurichhorn, the parkland is dotted with various interesting objects, more of which anon. We already saw the Tinguely sculpture "Heureka". Close by is this sculpture/fountain/whatever

The ball weighs 1000kg (metric tonne) but is supported effortlessly by water pressure. You can spin it around with two fingers. A nice bit of fun

Lakeside - morning

Zurich lakeside - Zurichhorn

Another view of the lakeside in the morning. Trees are now fully clad and I like the diversity of leaves and branches

Stadt Zürich

Stadt Zurich paddle steamer

Another photo of the old paddle steamer Stadt Zürich as it comes into the berth at Burkliplatz. This taken a few days ago - now the rains have set in for Pfingsten holiday (Whitsun)

Shore sculptor

Zurichsee sculptures

This guy makes these intricately balanced sculptures down by the Zurich lakeside. They are transient of course. The fact that some of them survive for so long is in itself amazing. These ones are quite basic compared with others that I've seen him do

Zurichsee

Zurichsee

My lifestyle means that I shake hands with the sunrise a lot more often than the sunset. Today's an exception though, so here is a picture of the sun setting over Lake Zurich this evening. A timeless scene.. ooops forgot about the contrails...
