Mr Pei's Pyramid, The Louvre
A source of controversy when it was built (in 1989) the Louvre pyramid has probably become the international icon of Paris's mega-museum-gallery. I doubt if many people would recognise the Louvre from any of the other (many) architectural views.
I like it, and as well as an icon, it did solve a unique architectural problem - that of access to the Louvre.
I hadn't been to the Louvre for almost 20 years, and I have to say - words fail me.
If I am perfectly honest, there are many places in Paris I prefer over the Louvre, not last because one always tends to plan to see too much - it's so tempting! I found it best to only go and see one or two exhibitions but it's quite costly...
But anyway, DO come back to Paris, only not just now - it's cold, miserable and the Parisians are stressed out (nothing new there).... Await April, maybe March - and it will be perfect! And rather visit the Musée d'Orsay anyway, or go and walk through the gardens of the Petit Palais before having a very nice lunch at their resto!
Agree absolutely about the Louvre, and "big" exhibitions. I was only in Paris for the weekend and I wanted to see a few Venetian paintings looted by Napoleon, so I wasn't overcome by the scale of the place, although I couldn't ignore it. One good thing about the Louvre is that your 10 Euro ticket is valid for the whole day, and you can come and go as you please. I had a quick orientation trip in the morning - went for lunch, and came back in the afternoon to concentrate on one or two pieces.
I'll be back to Paris certainly this year, and I'll follow your advice
And you're right - it was freezing !
Consider yourself as lucky. It's much colder since you left! Anyhow, welcome back... any time!
