Zürich Shopping

Bahnhofstrasse, although discreet, is one of the top shopping streets in the world. However, no farther away than you could throw your gold Rolex, you will find this...

And here is what you can buy - or at least a modest selection of what you can find inside.

Actually I'm rather terrified of what you might find inside, so I've never ventured over the doorstep. Lot's of army surplus, that kind of thing. I also just noticed that this photo makes it look as though they have a London bus in there as well.

I can see that tagging features in your first photo - illustration of what you were saying earlier about that in Zurich. As for the second, very sexy air hostesses in front of a London bus, it opens the door to all sorts of fantasies (or is it just me???? LOL)

BTW, I loved "der geist" and the collection of traditional Switzerland posters.

Nathalie - not just you I expect - that window is almost a "pick any fantasy you like as long as it is in uniform" showroom! Inside I'm sure they have belts and straps and buckles and all sorts of other accessories

Nathalie - I think the graffiti is part of the decor here. Bahnhofstrasse has its own sort of graffiti. It goes a bit like this..

"Gucci" "Louis Vuitton" "Bruno Magli" "Prada" "Cartier"..... it^s all just a badge, and a uniform really, isn't it?

Switzerland is a country of contrasts. I have lived here for over a year and cannot help but think that underneath the conservativism and understated wealth there is something a little more sinister, which either the Swiss turn a blind eye to or are happy to co-exist with. PS: The spraypainting looks like Harald Naegeli.... I did a post on it and I am pretty sure it is one of his, how long ago did you take this picture?

Hi Shaun - Welcome to Switzerland and thanks for the comment. But what could be more sinister than conservatism and understated wealth?

Thanks for the note about Harald Naegeli. I'm not sure it's the same guy though. I've seen several of these in Zurich and they all seem to have the simple components of this one - I'll try and get some more photos

Cheers

You are absoloutely correct about wealth and conservatism, and I guess 100% correct. Well put. I am looking forward to you going inside the shop and writing about it. The contrast in your blog would make for interesting reading.

Shaun - sure - you first. I'll be right behind you

Hey Pascal! - sorry, did I upset you? Mein Deutsch ist immer noch nicht gut!. I never said anything bad about the people that run the store, and I agree that there is always space for alternative commerce. I think I was also poking fun at Bahnhofstrasse, as you can see in previous comments

no no, you didn't upset me, sorry if it seemed that way :) just wanted to tell you what i knew about the store and her owner.
# Posted By Pascal Grob | 3/17/09 3:14 AM
Pascal - phew! I know the store has been there for years and has always been a curiosity to me. But that's what I like about Zürich - I like your photos btw, but what happened to the Tumblr site?
# Posted By richard | 3/17/09 3:21 AM
unfortunately, i have too many visitors, so the photos, which are hosted on photobucket have exceeded their bandwidth limit...if you wanna see some more photographs you could add me one facebook :) i saw your photoblog as well. My preferred tool is a Leica as well!
# Posted By Pascal Grob | 3/17/09 3:24 AM
oh, damn. same happened to my pascalgrob.blogspot blog – haven't even noticed that..
# Posted By Pascal Grob | 3/17/09 3:27 AM
Pascal - too many visitors? Must have been good! I "resigned" from Facebook - I don't like their policy. Did you mean the shutterchance photoblog?

Pascal - what's wrong with blogger or one of the other free blogs for your photos?
# Posted By richard | 3/17/09 3:30 AM
sorry Pascal, I didn't realise you were using Photobucket to host the images. Do you need to do that?
# Posted By richard | 3/17/09 3:34 AM
photobucket was more convenient up until now...I am using flickr now as my host ^^

maybe those links will work:

I actually meant the other blog, where you posted some gear like the strap and so on...but that shutterchance page looks nice as well!

I like the uncropped traditional approach - what you saw is what we get, and the subject matter - lots of people and faces

Have a nice week :)
# Posted By richard | 3/17/09 3:48 AM
So... now its been two days since the last post... or did you go into the shop and didnt manage to come back out?
# Posted By Shaun | 3/19/09 2:19 PM
Shaun - obviously you didn't see me walking up and down Bahnhofstrasse with that air hostess uniform on
