...and talking of verticals and thirds, I can't work out why the tower is vertical but the shore isn't horizontal

ham - me too. However it is Venice where right-angles are hard to come by - although San Giorgio has always looked pretty vertical to me. I could fiddle with transformations in PS I suppose

Well.. maybe simply because the shore is not parallel to the picture plane.
