I'm off to Venice in a few days so I feel like whetting my appetite. This is a favourite memory of La Serenissima - the view from the back of a water bus, early morning, light on the water, as the Venezianos make their way to work. I can already feel the grinding and hear the characteristic churning of the vaporetti.

A matter of taste, but for me lots to appreciate here, having also been doing a lot of "wave pattern" shots lately (all river scale, nothing terrifying).

The power of the water is particularly pleasing here - and the sheer mass of it. (Not to forget the rest of the picture).

What about that nice little bit of unsharp fuzz in the foreground? Like the splashy bit on the right, BUT....wold that look better if it were sharp ((faster shutter needed) and the same for the bit on the left? A strong simple and totally unimportant water shot (but a nice memento).....with something nice to think about. Would that bit be better all sharp with every dot of spray perfectly held? Or is it better all soft and rushing?

Anyway...time to stir the Borscht for tonight's dinner.

Hi Chucker - thankfully all your questions can be answered by sheer expediency. The horizon had to be in focus for me, so the foreground is out of focus anyway just because of DOF. It was gloomy and even with a shutter speed of 1/45s I guess the aperture was f4 or f5.6. Increasing shutter speed not an option - but I know what you mean

quite so, and it's still a pleasing photo.......I was (as you imply) just rapping about esthetics rather than technological issues. Even you must struggle with certain "given facts".

Nice body of water there... to whet your appetite or wet your appetite? (I know the difference, I'm a spelling freak).
Nice conversation going with Chuck. Venice should be fun.
I hope you can teach me to use my camera in more creative and technically advanced ways.
